USDA zones are zones of average minimum winter temperatures, for example zone 7 or less by a plant means it is pretty much hardy anywhere in the UK, zone 8 is hardy although some plants may need some winter protection in areas of cold or exposure, zone 9 means winter protection unless by the coast, in an urban area or somewhere very sheltered, zone 10 plain tricky
